Freight protection

Cargo coverage helps protect both the trucker and the cargo owner.

Motor truck cargo insurance is customized for the trucking industry. It can be written as a standalone policy or as an endorsement depending on the insurer, and it is often requested by brokers, shippers, and risk managers before they release loads.

For-hire truckers

Owner-operators and for-hire carriers often need cargo insurance to meet shipper and broker requirements.

Cargo damage

Coverage can help with cargo that is lost, damaged, or destroyed by covered events such as accidents, fire, theft, or vandalism.

Reefer loads

Refrigeration breakdown can be added for eligible reefer operations when spoiled cargo is a concern.

Cargo Plus

Progressive Commercial lists Cargo Plus as an enhancement that can expand protection for wetness, rust, corrosion, and certain temperature-change situations.

Limits and deductibles

The limit may be set by the shipper or receiver, and the deductible is your out-of-pocket amount for a claim.

Important restrictions

Not every vehicle, cargo type, commodity, storage situation, or state is eligible, so the details matter before binding coverage.

Motor truck cargo Protects transported materials and pays for property losses caused by events that damage cargo.
Refrigeration breakdown Can cover losses from spoilage or changes in temperature for eligible refrigerated cargo operations.
Cargo Plus An endorsement that can expand protection to wetness, rust, corrosion, and certain reefer temperature-change losses.
Common covered events Examples include cargo lost, damaged, or destroyed by covered accidents, fire, theft, and vandalism.
Common exclusions Progressive lists excluded cargo such as art, jewelry, money, paper, contraband, property in another carrier’s custody, cargo stored more than 72 hours, and explosive or radioactive material.
Vehicle limitations Progressive lists cargo coverage as not offered for vehicles such as garbage trucks, limos, hearses, buses, passenger vans, motor homes, and ice cream trucks.
Commodity restrictions Restrictions can apply to live animals, items not listed on shipping documents, conveyances not specified on the bill of lading, pharmaceuticals, tobacco, and alcohol except beer or wine.
Household goods rule FMCSA cargo minimums apply to household-goods haulers, with Progressive noting $5,000 per vehicle and $10,000 per occurrence as a minimum.
Cargo coverage is not truck physical damage coverage. It protects the freight you haul; your vehicle needs separate physical damage coverage for collision, theft, vandalism, and similar losses.
